ICAP launches comprehensive PrEP training package for providers

By Hamu Madzedze

ICAP a major global health organisation has developed a comprehensive training package that will give clinical providers who work around the world particularly those in the resource-limited countries the latest technical information on Pre-Exposure Prophylaxis (PrEP) products currently endorsed by the World Health Organisation along with practical guidance for its use in clinical settings.

ICAP's senior technical specialist in the Clinical and Laboratory Unit Julie Franks said the organisation's PrEP package for providers :PrEparing for Choice responds to the current gap in knowledge and experience on how to present multiple options for PrEP to clients.

"To date initiation and persistence on PrEP has fallen short of global targets and there is a need to improve how PrEP is made accessible to people and support them to use it effectively in their daily lives" said Franks

Senior technical advisor in ICAP's Clinical and Laboratory Unit ,Cassia Well who spearheaded the package said a critical part of the package is the idea of informed choice.

"This is a relatively new concept and this idea of choice around PrEP and therefore we are trying to prepare for future needs as countries are just beginning to roll out options" said Well.

She said with an emphasize on putting more control into the hands of clients about when and how they choose to use PrEP is of importance because more people are more likely to use a method that fits into their lives.

Well also pointed out that with this package providers are given the tools they need to help clients make a deliberate choice to protect themselves with PrEP
