UZ LAUNCHES RESEARCH STUDY ON CANCER

By Hamu Madzedze

The University of Zimbabwe in partnership with the University of Capetown and Queen Mary University of London has embarked on a four-year cancer research study.

The study is aimed at coming up with detection tools for early diagnosis for Cervical, Breast and Colorectal cancers since it has been proven that early detection of the disease is key in reducing cancer mortality.

One of the researchers Dr Chipo Gwanzura said the study will be conducted for four years in Zimbabwe which is a low resourced country and South Africa an upper middle-income country.

"The global shift in comprehensive cancer control is on early diagnosis which gives better outcomes and reduces the severity of illness and deaths from cancer ", said Dr Gwanzura.

The study is a National Institute for Health Research-funded program and the Cancer Registry notes that 24 million people have cancer annually and 13 million patients die, with 75% of the 13 million being in low and middle-income countries.
